UNICEF warns of “very high" risk of famine in Gaza
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned that many children face severe acute malnutrition.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell shared the message on her social media account X.
Pointing out that the risk of famine in Gaza is increasing, Russell stressed that hundreds of thousands of children may suffer from severe malnutrition in the near future.
"Time is running out. Many children are already facing severe acute malnutrition," Russell said.
Stressing that some children may face death, Russell noted that they cannot allow this to happen.
Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip after October 7
On October 7, 2023, the military wing of Hamas, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, launched a full-scale offensive against Israel under the pretext of "responding to the ongoing violations of Palestinians and sacred values, especially the Al Aqsa Mosque."
Israel announced that 1,200 Israelis were killed and 5,132 injured in the October 7 attacks.
As a result of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, 22,313 Palestinians were killed, including at least 9,100 children and 6,500 women. It is reported that thousands of dead are under the rubble, and civilian infrastructure is being destroyed as a result of shelling of hospitals and educational institutions where people are sheltering.
The number of Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza since October 7, when Israel launched massive attacks on the region, has risen to 509 people, including 175 killed during the ground offensive.
During the "humanitarian pause" in the conflict, which was given for 4 days on November 24, 2023 and later extended for another 3 days, 81 Israeli and 240 Palestinian prisoners were mutually released. On the other hand, Israel continued to detain and imprison thousands of Palestinians.
323 Palestinians have died as a result of attacks by Israeli forces and illegal Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
Since October 8, 2023, 28 Lebanese civilians, 142 Hezbollah members, 5 Israeli civilians and 9 Israeli soldiers have been killed in clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on the border.
Hamas leader Salih al-Aruri and six senior Hamas officials were killed yesterday in a drone attack in southern Beirut.
