TRNC Tatar President: "A federal solution has been exhausted in Cyprus"
The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, stated that it is impossible to start an official negotiation process with the Greek Cypriots unless the international equal status, sovereignty and state of the Turkish Cypriot people are accepted, and said: "The decision on a federal basis in Cyprus has been exhausted."
Due to the fact that the TRNC has the status of an "observer" in the Gambian capital Banjul, the 15th session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held. The President of the Tatars, who attended the summit, held a press conference at Ercan Airport upon his return to Nicosia.
Tatar stated that from now on they will strive to further increase the recognition of the TRNC and thanked Turkey for always supporting them in this sense.
Sharing information that during his contacts at the summit, he invited officials of the Organization's member countries to the ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus peacekeeping operation, President Tatar said that the TRNC's position in peace, tranquility and security, despite the Covid-19 epidemic, as well as the wars in the region, represents stability and success.
Pointing out that the TRNC pursues a policy in harmony with Turkey in all spheres, Tatar stressed that the prerequisites for the start of the official negotiation process with the Greek Cypriots are the recognition of the international equal status, sovereignty and state of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Tatar continued as follows: "The decision on a federal basis in Cyprus has been exhausted. We are not backing away from our new policy based on the principle of two States. I will report this to the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) in Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, with whom I will meet later this week. Negotiations can only be based on our new two-state policy of sovereign equality, confirmed at the international level."
