It is reported that the process of determining candidates from political parties for the general elections to be held on March 2 in Tajikistan has begun.

According to a statement from the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of Tajikistan, the process of nominating candidates from political parties in the country began in accordance with the decree on holding parliamentary and local elections signed by President Emomali Rahman last month.

The process of determining candidates for the elections to the House of Representatives, the lower house of Parliament, as well as provincial and district municipal councils will be completed next week.

According to the law, citizens who have reached the age of 30 will be able to run for members of the House of Representatives.

According to a decree signed by President Rahman last month, elections to the House of Representatives, the lower house of the country's parliament, as well as provincial and district municipal councils will be held on March 2, and elections to the National Assembly, the upper house of parliament, will be held on March 28.

Of the 63 deputies of the House of Representatives, 22 will be elected according to the proportional electoral system, and 41 will be elected according to the majority electoral system.

While the National Assembly consists of 33 members, 25 of them will be elected by secret ballot from among the council members at meetings of provincial and district municipal councils, and 8 members will be appointed by the President. Any citizen who has reached the age of 30 and has completed higher education can be elected to the National Assembly.

According to the commission, 5,522,000 voters are registered in the country, while voters will be able to vote at more than 3,000 polling stations that will be established in 41 electoral districts. 36 polling stations will be set up at Tajikistan's diplomatic missions in 28 foreign countries for Tajik citizens staying abroad.

In the last elections held on March 1, 2020, the ruling People's Democratic Party won 47 of the 63 seats in the House of Representatives, while the Farmers' Party, which cleared the 5 percent threshold, won 7 seats, the Economic Reform Party won 5, the Communist Party won 2, and the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party each won one seat.
