President of Azerbaijan Aliyev called for cooperation in the fight against climate change

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called on the world to cooperate constructively and in good faith in the fight against climate change, saying: "We have no right to waste time trying to figure out who is responsible for global warming, who is causing more damage to the environment."

 

The 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22 in Baku. In the run-up to the Conference of the Parties (COP-29), an event was held entitled "Preparing for COP-29: Raising ambitions, facilitating action".

The event was attended by Chairman of COP-29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev, Chairman of COP-28, Special Representative of the United Arab Emirates on Climate Change and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC UN) Simon Still.

The event was also attended by Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Babayev read the message of President Ilham Aliyev to the participants.

In his message, Aliyev noted that climate change affects all countries, but small island developing states are more vulnerable to these consequences.

Stating that this situation negatively affects the livelihoods of people around the world and hinders progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Aliyev said that how Azerbaijan invests its revenues from oil and natural gas in "green energy".

Stating that they are a candidate to host COP-29 in support of global action to combat climate change, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan has received unanimous support and that they are proud to host this event.

Stating that Azerbaijan, as the chairman of COP-29, has assumed the role of a neutral platform for negotiations, Aliyev said in his message: "As we enter the final stage of preparations for COP29, I urge you to cooperate constructively and in good faith on behalf of humanity. Despite the fact that States have common but different responsibilities, they must stop blaming their differences and each other and find common ground. We have no right to waste time trying to figure out who is responsible for global warming and who is causing more damage to the environment."

In the speeches delivered at the event, opinions and appeals were expressed on issues such as increasing climate finance, expanding cooperation in combating climate change and supporting affected countries.
