The foundation of Astana
Having declared its independence on December 16, 1991, Kazakhstan decided in 1997 to move the country's capital from Almaty in the south to Akmola in the north.
The relevant decision was signed by the then President of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev, despite sharp criticism from members of the government, deputies and intellectuals.
Thus, Akmola, a small city with harsh winters and underdeveloped socio-economic and infrastructure, began to rebuild into the capital of Kazakhstan.
In 1998, the name of the city was changed to Astana, which means capital in Kazakh.
World-renowned architects such as Norman Foster and Kisho Kurokawa took part in the construction of the city.
If the population of the city at first was 300 thousand people, then over time this number reached 1.4 million.
The capital, which began to be built from scratch 26 years ago, has become not only the political, economic and tourist center of the country, but also its national brand.
