Important statements by the President of the TRNC Tatar on his return from the USA: There is no common point of view

TRNC President Ersin Tatar made important statements after his contacts in the United States. Tatar stated that he personally told Guterres that there are no points of contact between the two sides in Cyprus.

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar stated that the Greek Cypriot side had created the impression that "there will be a new negotiation process in Cyprus" and stated that he personally explained to the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres that there are no points of contact between the two sides on the island.

Tatar held a press conference at Ercan Airport on his return from a trip to the United States. Stating that the Greek Cypriot side had created the impression that "there will be a new negotiation process in Cyprus," Tatar said that they had put an end to this perception by contacts with the United States. Tatar recalled that the personal representative of the UN Secretary General, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, is working to find out whether there are points of contact between the parties in Cyprus. Stating that he personally explained to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that there are no points of contact between the two sides on the island, Tatar said that he explained to all officials he met the TRNC's policy of confirming its sovereign equality and equal international status.

THERE IS NO DEAL WITHOUT RECOGNITION OF CYPRUS

Tatar said: "We said that if they think they will force us to sit down at the negotiating table, putting pressure on us at a time when the embargo and isolation are continuing, it will be wrong, we will not accept it, we are pursuing a new policy and this policy is quite clear and straightforward." Noting that Guterres respects the position of the Turkish Cypriot side and noted that no process can begin with coercion, Tatar indicated that he conveyed to his interlocutors that from the point of view of negotiations, only one issue can be reached with recognition of the inalienable rights of Turkish Cypriots. Tatar stressed that if an agreement is reached in Cyprus, it will be only through recognition of the TRNC, and that they will never compromise on their rights and will not deviate from the policy of "sovereign equality and equal international status", which they advocate. As part of his visit to the United States, which began on April 5, Tatar held meetings with UN Secretary General Guterres, officials of the US State Department, think tanks and non-governmental organizations.
