Hidden city in the mountains of Uzbekistan: one of the oldest places since the Middle Ages!
Scientists from the University of Washington have discovered two medieval cities in the mountains of Uzbekistan, which are of great importance for the history of the Silk Road. The cities of Tashbulak and Tugunbulak, which were mapped using lidar scans based on UAVs, stand out as shopping malls at an altitude of up to 2 thousand meters. Tugunbulak is considered one of the largest settlements of that period with an area of 120 hectares.
Hidden medieval cities have been discovered in the mountains of Uzbekistan. Scientists from the University of Washington have discovered two ancient cities in the high mountains of Uzbekistan, which are of great importance for the history of the Silk Road.
Researchers have discovered detailed maps of these medieval cities, Tashbulak and Tugunbulak, using the region's first lidar scanning based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The team led by Michael Frachetti studied squares, walls, roads and residential areas of cities using lidar technology.
These cities, located at an altitude of two thousand meters, stand out as one of the shopping centers that developed in the mountains of that period.
It is believed that Tugunbulak was one of the largest cities of that period with an area of 120 hectares. "These centers were excellent points of interaction on the Silk Road. Here, animals, precious metals and other resources were the lifeblood of trade," he said.
The first excavations show that the structure, surrounded by three-meter-thick earthen walls in Tugunbulak, could have been a factory where local metallurgists produced steel.
Although this discovery provides important information about the role of Central Asia on the Silk Road, it indicates that future research may make new discoveries about the history of the region.
